Dougherty County, Georgia

The Dougherty County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Albany.

Geography

The County is located in the central southwest Georgia, is in the south about 80 km from the northern border of Florida and in the West about 70 miles from the eastern border of Alabama. It has an area of 867 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lee County, Worth County, Mitchell County, Baker County, Calhoun County and Terrell County.

History

Dougherty County was formed on December 15, 1853 from parts of Baker County. Later parts of Worth County were added. It was named after Judge Charles Dougherty.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Dougherty County 96 065 people in 35 552 households and 24 282 families. The population density was 113 people per square kilometer. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 87.4 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
