Douglas Alexander

Douglas Garven Alexander ( born October 26, 1967 in Glasgow ) is a British Labour Party politician. Since 1997 he is member of the House of Commons for the Scottish constituency of Paisley South, after the election rice Reform 2005 Paisley and Renfrewshire South. According to various government offices, he was most recently Minister for International Development in Gordon Brown's cabinet. Since 20 January 2011, he is Shadow Foreign Secretary.

Early life

Alexander was born in Glasgow, the son of a minister ( pastor ) of the Church of Scotland. Alexander went to Park Mains High School in Erskine, Renfrewshire. In 1984 he moved to Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific in Canada, where he graduated with the International Baccalaureate. Subsequently, he studied politics and modern history at the University of Edinburgh.

After a year as a speech writer and a research assistant for Gordon Brown, the then Shadow Minister for Trade and Industry, he returned to the University of Edinburgh to study law. He graduated in 1993 with a LL.B. now and then qualified as a lawyer ( solicitor).

Political career

In the election to the House of Commons in the constituency of Perth and Kinross in 1995 he was a candidate for the Scottish Labour Party and was runner-up. At the next regular election in the then newly formed constituency of Perth and North Perthshire, he was despite an improvement in his votes result of third parties. In the same year he was a candidate in a by-election for the constituency of Paisley South and was elected on November 6, 1997. He was re-elected at the next election in 2001 with a significant increase in votes .. In the years 2005 and 2010, he was elected in succession Constituency Paisley and Renfrewshire South

After his successful role as campaign manager in 2001 he was Minister of State ( comparable to a state secretary in Germany ) with responsibility for "e -commerce and competitiveness" Department of Trade and Industry in. In 2002 he moved to the Cabinet Office, the Office of the Prime Minister. In 2003 he was promoted to Minister of the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. In September 2004, he was Minister of State for Trade, Investment and Foreign Affairs in trade and foreign ministry. After the election in 2005 he was Minister of State for Europe with cabinet rank in the Foreign Ministry. Consequently, he was on 7th June 2005 Member of the Privy Council. On 5 May 2006, he was finally Secretary of State for Transport, and simultaneously Secretary of State for Scotland. After taking office, Gordon Brown in 2007, he was Secretary of State for International Development.

According to the Labour defeat in 2010 Douglas Alexander was first Shadow Minister for International Development, then for Work and Pensions, and finally 21 January 2011 Shadow Foreign Secretary ( Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs ).
