Douglas County (Kansas)

Douglas County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lawrence.

Geography

The County is located just north east of Kansas, is about 40 miles from Missouri away and has an area of 1229 square kilometers, of which 46 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jefferson County, Leavenworth County, Johnson County, Miami County, Franklin County, Osage County and Shawnee County.

History

Douglas County was released on May 15, 1854 for settlement and formed on 30 August 1855 as original county of free territory. It is among the first 33 counties that were formed by the first territorial administration. It was named after Stephen Arnold Douglas, a U.S. Senator and presidential opponents of Abraham Lincoln.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Douglas County 99 962 people in 38 486 households, and 21,167 families in Douglas County. The population density was 84 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 86.09 percent White, 4.24 percent African American, 2.56 percent Native American, 3.12 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.20 percent from other races groups; 2.73 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.27 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 38 486 households out of which 27.4 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 43.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers and 45.0 percent were non-families. 28.5 percent of all households were single-person households and 5.8 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.

20.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 26.4 percent of 18 to 24 years 28.3 percent between 25 and 44, 16.9 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 7.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 98.7 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 97.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 37,547, and the median income for a family was $ 53,991. Males have a median income of $ 35,577, women $ 27,225. The per capita income was $ 19,952. 6.2 percent of families and 15.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
