Douglas County (Kansas)

Douglas County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lawrence.

Geography

The County is located just north east of Kansas, is about 40 miles from Missouri away and has an area of ​​1229 square kilometers, of which 46 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jefferson County, Leavenworth County, Johnson County, Miami County, Franklin County, Osage County and Shawnee County.

History

Douglas County was released on May 15, 1854 for settlement and formed on 30 August 1855 as original county of free territory. It is among the first 33 counties that were formed by the first territorial administration. It was named after Stephen Arnold Douglas, a U.S. Senator and presidential opponents of Abraham Lincoln.
