Douglas Gamley

Douglas Gamley (* September 13, 1924 in Melbourne, Australia; † 5 February 1998) was an Australian film composer, pianist, conductor and arranger.

Life

Gamley Douglas, who played in his hometown of Melbourne in Waldemar Seidel, a pianist and music teacher, a study was from 1956 as a conductor, arranger and composer in the British film industry operates. One of his early work as a composer he provided for the adventure movie Playing with Fire ( Fire Down Below, 1957) with Robert Mitchum, Rita Hayworth and Jack Lemmon in the leading roles. For productions with big stars like this Gamley was rarely involved. Often he composed for small productions from the horror and thriller genre, including such films as Tales from the Crypt ( Tales from the Crypt, 1972) and The Abominable Dr. House of Death ( Madhouse, 1974). For the British horror film Asylum ( 1972) he adapted Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition (1874 ) as the orchestral version as well as the symphonic poem Night on Bald Mountain (1867 ).

During the 1950s and 1960s Gamley also wrote music for the BBC production, some compositions in the television series Doctor Who found use later. In 1975, he received as a conductor, his first and only Oscar nomination for Best Original Score for Stanley Donen The Little Prince ( The Little Prince). From 1976, he worked with his compatriot Richard Bonynge as musical director at the opera in Vancouver. Then many years he worked as a conductor and arranger of the Australian Pops Orchestra. For those produced by Disney movie Tron (1982 ) he conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1983, he retired into private life. He died in 1998 at the age of 73 years.
