Work

Douglas Gordon was known in 1993 with the video installation 24 Hour Psycho, in which he expands a commercially available videotape of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho ( 1960) for a period of 24 hours. The interest for the alienation of cinema icons determined since his oeuvre: 1998 created the idea of The Searchers by John Ford from 1956 to the duration of action of the film, 5 years to extend (5 year drive by ). It was, in the desert of Monument Valley, realized in part on the set of the film.

Add something in between my mouth and your ear 1994 Gordon realizes the time he has experienced during the pregnancy of his mother in her womb before birth; in a dark room you can hear from different speakers Chart Hits the period from January to September 20, 1966, the day of his birth; with this time travel to the year 1966, he brings the past into the present and promotes as an archaeologist cultural products of the past time to light. At the same time he puts himself and the audience back to its previous time; it measures with the nine months, the time of his " production ".

In Between Darkness and Light (after William Blake ) (1997 ) Gordon uses two other classics of cinema history, The Exorcist by William Friedkin and The Song of Bernadette by Henry King. He projected one film from one side and from the other side on a free-standing, translucent screen so that they overlap mirrored.

Feature Film (1999 ) is the first self-rolled film by Douglas Gordon, a further examination of a Hitchcock movie. Gordon was the memorable movie music of Vertigo, which was composed by Bernard Hermann, reschedule the Orchestra of the Opera National de Paris under its then chief conductor James Conlon. During the performance, Gordon filmed the face and hands of the conductor with multiple cameras from different perspectives. Music and image merge to his own interpretation of the well-known musical motifs that connect to the cinematic action arises in the mind of the beholder.

At Art Basel 2006 Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno French filmmaker showed a film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait. In this they portray the football star and former French international Zinedine Zidane over the entire time of a league game of his club Real Madrid. 16 high-speed cameras with zoom lenses were strong posted on the sidelines and on the top rank of the stadium, the Zidane normally pursue all simultaneously, in close-up. The course of the game remains unclear due to the lack of commentary and focus on one player. The focus of attention is directed to facial expressions and gestures Zidane, on recurring patterns of movement and minimal break out of the routine of the professional footballer.

The concept of the film is not new, as early as 1970 ("like never before football " ) turned the German director Hellmuth Costard a similar film about George Best, then at Manchester United. Eight 16 mm cameras then took on only George Best. The film was broadcast in 1971 by the ARD. However, the two films differ in terms of the quality and number of cameras, the cut and the resulting visual aesthetic. Ultimately, with the charismatic George Best and the impenetrable Zidane portrays two very different football personalities. Douglas Gordon self- made creates the reference to Andy Warhol's Screen Tests in an interview.

In addition to works that deal with movies, are by Douglas Gordon conceptual text works (list of names, 1990 - ongoing), photographs and some video installations have been exhibited, in which he historic found-footage material used ( Hysterical, 1994/95, 10 ms -1, 1994).
