Douglas Lowe (athlete)

Douglas Gordon Arthur Lowe ( born August 7, 1902 in Manchester, † March 30, 1981 in Cranbrook, Kent ) was a British athlete. At a height of 1.83 m his competition weight was 70 kg.

While studying law at Pembroke College, Cambridge, he won from 1922 to 1924 three times the annual comparison fight against Oxford over 880 yards in 1924, he also won on the mile.

Lowe won at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 the 800 -meter run in 1:52,4 minutes before the Swiss Paul Martin. In the 1500 -meter run Lowe took fourth place in 3:57,0 minutes.

In 1926, the championships of the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA ) Lowe was in 1:52,0 minutes over 880 yards second behind the German Otto Peltzer in 1:51,6 minutes. Both were under the old world record. 1927 Lowe won his first title at AAA Championships, when he won over 440 yards, 880 yards and in the relay. In 1928 he repeated his victories over 440 yards and over 880 yards.

At the Summer Olympics in Amsterdam in 1928 he repeated in the 800 -meter run his Olympic victory in 1924, this time he won ahead of Sweden's Erik Byléhn. His winning time of 1:51,8 minutes was until 1948 a British record. At the games in Amsterdam, he finished also with the British 4x400 - meter relay to fifth place. Lowe finished his career after the season 1928.

1931 to 1938 he was General Secretary of the British Association of Athletics Federations. 1964, the lawyer was appointed as a judge to the " Crown Court ".
