Douglas Reye

Ralph Douglas Kenneth Reye ( born April 5, 1912 in Townsville, † July 16, 1977 ) was an Australian pathologist and describer of Reye's syndrome, named after him.

Life

After graduating from medical school at the University of Sydney Reye came as an assistant at the Department of Pathology, Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in Sydney, which should provide his professional home for the rest of his life. In 1941 he was first appointed acting head before then Director of the Department of Pathology in 1946. Most known for Reye was published in 1963 with Graeme Morgan and Jim Baral description of a occurring in children encephalopathy with fatty degeneration of the liver, which was later bear his name. Less well known is that he also first described a rare benign soft tissue tumor that Fibrous hamartoma of infancy.

Less than 24 hours after the retirement Reye died on 16 July 1977, to a ruptured aortic aneurysm. He is survived by his wife Corrie and a daughter.
