Douglas Samuel Jones

Douglas Samuel Jones, usually cited as DS Jones, ( January 10, 1922 *, † November 29, 2013 ) was a British applied mathematician.

Jones studied mathematics at Corpus Christi College, Oxford University. In 1948 he became an Assistant Lecturer and Lecturer in 1951 at the University of Manchester, 1955, he was a research professor at New York University and then again from 1955 to 1957 at the University of Manchester as a Senior Lecturer. 1957 to 1964 he was professor at the University of Keele and 1962/63 Visiting Professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University. From 1965 to 1992 he was professor of mathematics Ivory at the University of Dundee, where he developed particular the Numerical Analysis ( with the 1967 appointed to a professorship newly founded Andrew Ronald Mitchell).

He focused in particular on applications of analysis to electromagnetism and vibrations.

He holds honorary doctorates from the University of Strathclyde ( D.Sc. ) and in 1987 received the Naylor Prize. In 1982 he was awarded the van der Pol Gold Medal of the International Union of Radio Science. He is a member of the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, their Keith Medal he received in 1974.

1964 to 2003 he was co-editor of the IMA Journal of Applied Mathematics, 1977-2002 from Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences, 1977-2002 of Methods and Applications of Analysis, since 1992 the Journal of Engineering Mathematics and since 1997, the Communications in Applied Analysis.
