Douvaine

Douvaine is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is capital of the canton Douvaine. The municipality is located in the wine region Savoie. White wines from the grape variety Chasselas ( locally called Chasselas ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Crépy.

Geography

Douvaine is located on 428 m above sea level. Level, 16 km northeast of the city of Geneva ( straight line ), close to the border with Switzerland. The community extends in the plane of the Bas -Chablais, on the northwest foot of Mont de Boisy, south of Lake Geneva.

The area of ​​10:54 km ² municipal area includes a little in relief section of the plane of the Bas -Chablais. History

The area around Douvaine was inhabited since Roman times. The place itself has its origin probably in the Burgundian. In the Middle Ages was called the market town Dovenum.

In the Middle Ages, the region formed around Douvaine during long been a bone of contention between the counties of Savoy, Faucigny and Geneva, to 1355 came the whole territory of the Counts of Savoy. From 1536 to 1567 (Treaty of Lausanne), the area was under Bernese domination. Later Douvaine shared the history of Savoy.

Attractions
