Dovrefjell–Sunndalsfjella National Park

The Norwegian Dovre Sunndalsfjella National Park was established on 1 June 2002. It replaced the Dovre National Park, which was established in 1974. The National Park is 1,693 square kilometers in size. It is divided by the E 6 in a larger Western and a smaller eastern part. The National Park Centre with an exhibition and a small botanical garden is located in Kong full on the E 6

The main attraction of the park are the musk oxen that were imported from Greenland 70 years ago and to move freely within the park. In Kong full guided muskox tour is offered (for a fee ). The best chance to spot musk ox, one has in Stroplsjødalen and Kaldvelldalen.

The most popular hiking destination in the western part of the park is the Snøhetta ( 2286 moh. ), The highest peak of the area. At his feet lies the self-service DNT cabin clean home ( key in full Kong available ). It takes two to three days, mountaineering equipment and experience are recommended.

In the eastern part of the park lives about mid-June to mid-August, a herd of Fjord horses. Best access is from the E 6 on the RV 29 to Dalen and on to Bekkelegret, the ( state ) Horse Station.

South of the park is the nature reserve Fokstumyra that the bird is in the first place. During the breeding season from late April to early July, the access is strictly regulated. The Dovre Sunndalsfjella National Park is one of the main breeding grounds of the Great Snipe. Here brooding about 400 breeding pairs of these classified by the IUCN as Near Threatened Article
