Action

John Dolittle can talk as a child with the animals. His father forces him this ability to suppress.

As Dolittle is grown up and in San Francisco working as a physician, he acquired this skill again. The animals come to be supplied by Dr. Dolittle. His wife Lisa thinks he is crazy.

When Dr. Dolittle operates a tiger in front of spectators, he gets promotion of a company.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that he was quite sure that the film is bad. He was " cloying ", " humorless ", as " as little finesse as possible " on, be it " artificially sentimental ".

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun - Times June 26, 1998 that the film with his physical and fecal elements ( " bodily functions" ) is suitable for children. He praised the characters of the animals.

Awards

The film won the Golden Screen Award and the Golden Bogey in 1998.

Eddie Murphy, Oliver Platt and Kyla Pratt have been nominated in 1999 for a Blockbuster Entertainment Award. Kyla Pratt was nominated for an Image Award and for the Young Artist Award in 1999. Eddie Murphy and the film was nominated for the Kids' Choice Award 1999.

The song Are You That Somebody? was nominated for the MTV Movie Award 1999. Richard Gibbs won the 1999 BMI film music award.

Background

The plot was inspired by the children's books of the series Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting.

The film was shot in San Francisco, Pasadena (California ) and in some Californian forests. The cost of production was estimated at 71.5 million U.S. dollars. The film played in theaters in the USA 144.2 million U.S. dollars, in the other countries - about 117 million U.S. dollars. The film's soundtrack was sold in about a million copies, including approximately 140,000 copies on the first weekend.
