Drackenstein

Drackenstein is a municipality in the district of Göppingen in Baden- Württemberg. With about 420 inhabitants, it is the smallest municipality in the Stuttgart region.

Geography

Geographical location

Drackenstein located on the slope between the Gosbachtal and the plateau of the Swabian Alb, about 25 km from the district town of Göppingen. From Unterdrackenstein a waterfall plunging into the valley of the Gos. Near the waterfall, is the Grotto, a several meters deep cave. On the plateau of the Swabian Alb, a karst mountain, in earlier times water was a precious commodity. Therefore, it was in Unterdrackenstein a hydraulic ram, pumped water after Oberdrackenstein. By connecting to the Lake Constance Water Supply in the 20th century these problems belong to the past.

On the opposite slope Drackensteiner the carriageway of the motorway 8 runs towards Stuttgart. There was the dragon hole, a cave that was filled in during the construction of the highway. It is believed that the name of the municipality dates back to a legend of the dragon hole.

Neighboring communities

The municipality is bordered to the north by Bad Ditzenbach, on the southeast by Merklingen in the Alb - Donau district, in the southwest on the High city and to the west by the city of Mühlhausen in Wiesensteig and Dales.

The municipality consists of the village Oberdrackenstein, the hamlet Unterdrackenstein and the homestead Kölleshof.

History

Drackenstein was first mentioned in a chronicle of the monastery Zwiefalten from the year 1137. see also Castle Drackenstein

Policy

Together with Gruibingen, chief city, and the city of Mühlhausen in the Dales Wiesensteig forms the community since 1972 Gemeindeverwaltungsverband Upper Fils Valley.

Mayor

For honorary mayor in 2007 Klaus -Dieter Apelt (independent) was elected, who was also mayor of the city Wiesensteig until 2010. Since the municipality has less than 500 inhabitants, it is not entitled to a full-time mayor. His predecessor Herbert Gerber ( CDU), who also held the office at the same time in Wiesensteig and Drackenstein, was for a term of 42 years, the longest-serving mayor in Baden- Württemberg.

Coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms of Drackenstein is: In gold on green Dreienberg a fire-breathing red dragon.

This -talking local coat of arms was proposed in 1959 by the Archives Directorate in Stuttgart and awarded together with the red and yellow flag on 15 December of the same year by the Home Office.

Economy and infrastructure

Traffic

The two districts of Upper and Unterdrackenstein are connected by a county road. From the municipality of several county roads leading to neighboring communities Gosbach, High Town, Merklingen and Machtolsheim. There are also small community roads to Wiesensteig and in the Geislinger district Aufhausen. The old road from Gosbach over the Großmannshof after Oberdrackenstein is also accessible for the through traffic. The A8 motorway can be reached via the interchanges Mühlhausen and Merklingen in about 7 km and 9 km away. The Behelfsausfahrt High City is only about 4 km from Drackenstein.

Due to the small population of the public transport system is only weakly developed. Through the community, the number 35 bus Deggingen - High City runs. The travel times are mostly tuned to the schools in Bad Ditzenbach and Deggingen. Partial consists in Bad Ditzenbach or Deggingen connection to the buses after Göppingen and Geislingen. In the evenings and on weekends only operates a Paratransit.

Education

Drackenstein not have its own school more. This former school building is in Unterdrackenstein next to the church and the cemetery. The Drackensteiner children now attend primary school in Bad Ditzenbach, the main school with Werkrealschule or secondary school in Deggingen or high schools in Geislingen. In Oberdrackenstein there is a nursery for children 2-6 years.

Business

There is a quarry on the road to Wiesensteig.

Religion

In Unterdrackenstein the Catholic St. Michael church with the cemetery. In Oberdrackenstein is also a Catholic Chapel. As to modern times only a few Protestants in Drackenstein lived, there is no Protestant church.
