Drakenstein is a municipality in the district of Cape Winelands, Western Cape Province in South Africa. In 2001 the population was 194 410 with a total area of 1,538 km ². The seat of the municipality is Paarl.

The municipality is named after the High Commissioner Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede dead Draakenstein who visited the Cape in 1685.

On the territory of the municipality lies the nature reserve Elandsberg Contract Nature Reserve, the largest contiguous section of the Renosterveldes.
