Draumkvedet

Draumkvedet ( The dream poem ) is a balladry an unknown author from Norway. The poem is one of the most important medieval ballads Norway.

Formation

It is assumed that a medieval origins. Some sources assume a date of origin between the 10th and 12th centuries. Elsewhere we find the words " around 1300 (maybe later) ." The poem was first transmitted orally and recorded in the 19th century writing. Known versions by Magnus Brostrup Landstad and Moltke Moe.

Content

The protagonist, Olav Asteson falls on Christmas Eve in a twelve- day-long sleep. In his dream he sees purgatory, heaven and hell and the Day of Judgment. On Epiphany, he wakes up and rides to a church in which he describes his vision.
