Drawing Restraint 9

Drawing Restraint is an art film / experimental film by Matthew Barney. He plays on the Japanese whaling factory ship Nisshin Maru. Throughout the film ( 135 minutes), there is only a single dialog during the tea ceremony in Japanese, which explains the history of the ship. On board a sculpture of Vaseline can be seen that changes several times during the movie.

Film screenings

The first performance outside of Japan took place at the Venice Film Festival on September 2, 2005.

Background

Drawing Restraint is an art exhibition by Matthew Barney with sculpture, video, installation, performance and drawings. By October 2005, it was exhibited in Japan, after which it was subsequently shown in Seoul, Korea and in the spring of 2006 in San Francisco.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was by the Icelandic musician Björk, Barney's girlfriend, composed; the texts were written by Björk and Barney. The soundtrack was created in collaboration with many other artists, including Mark Bell, Valgeir Sigursson, Will Oldham, Zeena Parkins and Leila.
