DreamWorks

DreamWorks SKG - appearing under the name DreamWorks LLC and DreamWorks Pictures - is a US-based studio, which primarily produces and distributes films. The company was founded by Steven Spielberg ( film director ), Jeffrey Katzenberg ( former head of Disney Animation Department) and David Geffen (founder of Geffen Records) in October 1994 founded, with the abbreviation SKG from the initials of the three founders composed. The music sequence of the leader company logo in movies comes from renowned film composer John Williams, who wrote the music for almost all of Steven Spielberg movies.

History

In the initial capital of Dreamworks Spielberg, Katzenberg and Geffen brought a 33 million U.S. dollars each, while Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen brought in a company with 500 million dollars. Together with Microsoft, the game development company Dreamworks Interactive was founded in 1995.

The first published DreamWorks film was The Peacemaker in 1997, the company built for this purpose in the United States on a stand-alone sales, while with Universal Studios completed for distribution outside the U.S. distribution agreement, whereby all the major titles via United International Pictures ( UIP) ( a joint venture of Metro -Goldwyn -Mayer (until 2000) were sold, Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures ). In the home video segment you first went their own way and founded DreamWorks Home Video, put it internationally due to the good relations Spielberg to Universal, also on their sales offices.

The construction of its own major film studios in the wastelands of California failed due to resistance from environmental groups who opposed the draining of a wetland. DreamWorks thus remained without a permanent studio and had to rent a room for studio shooting each at its competitors. Spielberg's production company Amblin Entertainment, which is rented from time immemorial on Universal's backlot ( Universal City ), thus became the de facto operating headquarters of DreamWorks.

For the production of computer-animated films joined DreamWorks in 1997 a co-production agreement with the computer animation company Pacific Data Images ( PDI), and published as the first film from this collaboration in 1998 Antz. The report published in the same year DreamWorks Animation movie The Prince of Egypt deposed contrast to classic animation technique.

For the coordination of the preparation of both classical and computer generated animation films Dreamworks created in 2000, the business unit DreamWorks Animation. The Southern California branch devoted to the classic animated film, the Northern California office was created by the 90 % acquisition of PDI from which PDI / DreamWorks was formed exclusively devoted to the computer-animated film.

From other divisions of DreamWorks separated: DreamWorks Interactive was sold to Electronic Arts in 2000. The music division, DreamWorks Records, were present at the stars like George Michael under contract, was sold to Universal Music Group (UMG ) in October 2003, where it was classified as DreamWorks Nashville in the UMG label.

As proved short-lived, the television division DreamWorks Television, which went on to after a few independent productions to co-produce TV series along with a Major, which also handles the sales usually.

The film division became difficult because although they have had critics success, commercial success, however, was mostly just very modest. The lack of an own studio and the increasing financial pressures resulted in larger film projects for enhanced cooperation with other major studios and included each co- financing and co- marketing. In this way films were made, together with General Electric's Universal Pictures, Viacom's Paramount Pictures, News Corporation's 20th Century Fox, Time Warner's Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures Entertainment's Columbia Pictures - due to breakage of Katzenberg with the Disney corporation, only this cooperation was categorically ruled out. In general, two films were produced with each partner, with DreamWorks once each distribution in the United States and the other time took over the sales outside the U.S..

Considerably more successful DreamWorks was with the animated films, whereupon in 2004, the business unit DreamWorks Animation from the company dissolved and converted into the listed public company, DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. in October. The company has since worked independent of its former parent company.

Various rumors about the sale of DreamWorks were verified during the year 2005, when it became known that both NBC Universal and Viacom were interested in acquiring and negotiating with DreamWorks. Viacom had short notice to get out of the active negotiations, what different analysts enticed to the hypothesis that NBC Universal would take over the film business of DreamWorks. In December 2005 it was announced that the Viacom subsidiary Paramount Pictures DreamWorks would take over. About half of the cost of acquisition of 1.6 billion U.S. dollars was Viacom, the other half came from other investors - including the debt of DreamWorks, which amounted to about 400 million U.S. dollars were taken. With the Business Paramount also took about 60 titles comprehensive film library DreamWorks ' sold these but three months later for $ 900 million more. Another consequence of the acquisition of all the movies produced by Paramount DreamWorks were expelled in 2006.

In June 2008 it was announced that DreamWorks would be out of my contract with Paramount. In July 2008, ran to negotiations with the Indian conglomerate Reliance ADA Group, which wanted to pay $ 550 million for DreamWorks. 5 October 2008, Viacom announced officially that Reliance would buy the shares previously held by Paramount. The DreamWorks films would, however, continue to be distributed by Paramount.

In August 2009, DreamWorks announced plans to build a new movie studio in Los Angeles and have already completed the necessary credit negotiations. Reflecting these were by J. P. Morgan Securities. The Walt Disney Studios, which is responsible for the distribution of all films from 2011, participate in the financing.
