Drents-Friese Wold National Park

The Nationaal Drenthe- Friese Wold is a 6150 -hectare, contiguous natural area on the border of the Dutch provinces of Friesland and Drenthe. The National Park is one of the largest of the existing 18 parks in the Netherlands and consists of woodland, heathland and drift sand areas. His closed forest area is the second largest in the Netherlands. He is framed by Appelscha in the southeastern part of Friesland en Doldersum, Diever Hoogersmilde, Wapse and Vledder in Drenthe.

The area Drenthe- Friese Wold 2000 was declared a national park. Holdings is the park of the State Forestry Administration ( Dutch: Staatsbosbeheer ), the Association for Nature Monuments ( Natuurmonomenten ), the Foundation Drentse Landschap and the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid Foundation. Only a very small part of the area is still in private ownership.

Middle of the 19th century began to reforest a large part of the large heath area. To the Good Berkenheuvel and Diverzand there are larger fir forests. In the forests there are numerous small fens and glades with heathlands, for example Snoekveen and Grote Veen. A wide heath field is located in the southwest of the park, the Doldersummerveld and Wasperveld, especially the bird-watching ( curlew, black goblets, Harrier ) is suitable and has one of the two existing Towers. Here is the upper reaches of the creek De Vledder Aa. Aekingerzand is the largest Flugsandverwehung. Here also the Woodlark and Schmätzer occur, the Grenspoel and on Good Berkenheuvel there are chances to observe hawks and woodpeckers.

Located in the National Park is located Oude Willem, a vast agricultural region, the cultivation of which is controlled by the nature conservation management.

The national park has a visitor center in Appelscha and Diever and information boards at the six large parking lots in the park. 30 circular walks over 130 miles of hiking trails are signposted. The routes vary between two and 6.5 kilometers in length and can be combined. Similarly, extended cycle-paths; two trips of 40 km and a 50 km for all-terrain trips can also be combined. At 75 kilometers rider trails run also covered wagon.
