DRG Class 03

The steam locomotives of Class 03 were Unity express locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, which the series were constructive 01 similar, but possessed a lower maximum axle load of 18 t.

History

The vehicles of Class 03 were built 1930-1938 as an express locomotive for routes that were only suitable for axle loads up to 18 t. From the constructive style similar to the Class 01 locomotive class 298 copies have been built by the company Borsig, Krupp, Henschel and Schwartzkopff.

The lower weight of the machine compared to the series 01 was achieved by a lighter bar frame, a smaller boiler and smaller cylinders. From operating number 03 123 was transferred the pump in the middle of the vehicle and down the road number 03 163 locomotives had the larger front wheels with 1000 mm instead of 850 mm diameter.

The locomotives of Class 03 were characterized by a low specific steam consumption of 6.32 kg / hp-hr with respect to the indicated power from. Also in coal consumption reported the machines with 0.86 kg / psih low values (compared to P 8 0.96 kg / psih, Series 01 0.93 kg / psih and S 3/6 0.88 kg / psih ).

The locomotive 03 154 was equipped with a parabolic smoke chamber door, a streamlined cab and a cowl of the engine. The 03 193 was given a wine-red streamlined full fairing and a tender 2'3 T 37 St to have a roughly equivalent replacement machine to the two copies of class 05 in operational service. Due to the aerodynamic Lokverkleidung the Drawbar tractive could be considerably increased at high speeds with up to 48 % ( Lok 03 193 ).

Furthermore received 03 204 and 03 205 piloted a cowl. The locomotives 03 175 and 03 207 had also piloted a Lentz- valve control. The locomotives of this series had a Tender of type T 30 2'2, 2'2 'T 32 and 2'2 ' T 34

Until 1959, when the German Federal Railroad 145 locomotives of Class 03 in action stock, of which 62 machines ( 03005-03122 ), with air and feed pump in the smoke chamber, small forward wheels ( 850 mm diameter) and a top speed of 120 km / h 16 machines ( 03127-03160 ) with aerodigestive pump between the middle and rear Treibradsatz, small forward wheels ( 850 mm diameter) and a top speed of 120 km / h and 67 machines ( 03164-03296 ) with air and feed pump between the middle and rear Treibradsatz, scissors shoe brakes, larger inducers ( 1.000 mm diameter) and a top speed of 130 km / h

1968 were still 45 copies of the now designated as the class 003 locomotives in service inventory at the DB. They were located in the following depots: two in the depot Braunschweig, six in Bremen Hbf, 13 Bw Hamburg -Altona, a Bw Husum, 16 Bw Mönchengladbach and seven in the depot Ulm.

The last ten locomotives of the series 003, DB were used from 1971 from Ulm, 1972, as the last 003 088, 003 131 and 003 268 z- placed.

The German Reichsbahn (DR ) had 86 machines in stock. From the year 1960, the Reichsbahn equipped with touch-ups for malicious group L4 their vehicles with Mischvorwärmern and back boilers of welded construction from. In contrast to the DB, the 03 series was not discarded by the DR in the early 1970s, but continued to be used in passenger train service. Among the more than ten Deployment depots included, among others Osb Berlin, Frankfurt ( Oder), P Hall and Leipzig Leipzig West South as well.

As part of the phasing out of the series 22 is also reconstructed 1969-1975 a total of 55 pieces of Class 03 using only a few years old combustion chamber boiler type 39 E of the discarded Series 22 The reconstructed 03 differed externally to the original version evident by the fact that on the boiler only the sandpit and a steam dome were built. A few machines were equipped with brand new boiler of the same type. Ultimately, all DR- machines have been equipped with at least mixing preheater and new back boilers up to the locomotive 03 001.

After the Second World War came about 40 machines to Polish State Railways PKP, they were led in this series as Pm 2.

The development of the BR 03 led to 03.10.

Design features and performance of the original version

The Class 03 was led out with a well- machined billet frame whose cheeks were thick only 90 instead of 100 mm for the class 01. In the area of the towing frame the cheeks strength was reduced to 40 mm.

The riveted, typical for standard locomotives long-tube boiler was then exported to the locomotive 03 122 with copper with steely firebox. The vessel was capable of generating 12 tons of steam per hour. As feeders you used a steam jet pump and a piston feed pump with Oberflächenvorwärmer.

The two-cylinder steam engine was performed with the actuator on the second Kuppelradsatz as Treibradsatz. The Heusinger control was hanging iron. As pressure equalizer was used initially angle valves, later Nicolai or Karl Schulz- shifter.

When you drive Kuppelradsätze were fixed in the frame, however, weakened the wheel flanges on the tires of Treibradsatzes by 15 mm. The leading bogie received a total of 100 mm lateral displacement, the executed when Adam axis travois total of 160 mm.

The speed limit of the locomotives was initially 120 km / h, after amplification of the brakes and increase the wheelset Wheel diameter 1,000 mm from locomotive 03 163 then 130 km / h Some machines have been approved in the 1930s for the design speed of the construction of 140 km / hr.

The locomotives of Class 03 were in the plane of an express train with a Wagenzugmasse of 430 t at 120 km / h and such a transport with a mass of 790 t at 100 km / hr. On a slope of ten parts per thousand were still 480 t be moved at 50 km / hr.

Design features of the reconstructed locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn

In the reconstruction of the Series 03 at the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR from 1957 ( see Rekolok ) the fully welded construction boiler used also in the series 41 or 22 Type 39 was used with E combustion chamber. This was at rated power with 14 tons of steam per hour, two tons of steam supply more than the boiler of the original version. To power the boiler next to a steam jet pump, a piston composite mixing pump were installed with mixer preheater.

In the framework of the locomotives had to be widened to incorporate the Rekokessels only the firebox edition. Running and engine of the machinery remained unchanged. The control goat was no longer attached to the boiler, but on the frame, further pressure compensation piston slide valve type Trofimoff were used. In addition to other minor changes such as the installation of a sliding roof in the cab which was apart from the other dome, sandbox assembly and the trapezoidal Mischvorwärmerkasten top of the smoke chamber most visible change that became necessary due to the wider standing boiler new cab front panels with narrower front windows ( with clear parts).
