DRG locomotive types

The operating genus characters of the Deutsche Reichsbahn was a designation system for steam locomotives. This made it possible to identify locomotives of different design with same performance. This allows the use of different steam locomotives of the former state railways was relieved.

The system was introduced in 1924 and consisted of four parts.

It was intended to apply the generic characters on electric locomotives. However, since these are universally applicable, this plan was abandoned.

Example

An express locomotive class 01 has the following generic characters: S36.20. This means: express locomotive with three coupled axles, a total of 6 axles and an axle load of 20 tons.
