Drigung Monastery

Drigung Thil ( Tib: ' bri supply mthil, Tibetan: འབྲི་གུང་མཐིལ ) is a monastery of Tibetan Buddhism in a circle Meldro Gongkar the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, about 150 km east of Lhasa.

History

Drigung Thil was in 1179 by Drigung Jigten Gönpo ( Tib: ' bri supply ' jig rten mgon po, 1143-1217 ) established as a seat of Drigung Kagyu Order and is today an important center of the Kagyu. The monastery was named after the place where it was built, and the Order is called to the convent. During the Mongol Yuan dynasty, the Kagyu Order was in opposition to the Sakya Order and Drigung Thil was in 1290 attacked militarily. During the subsequent Ming dynasty Drigung Thil was able to hold back.

In Drigung Thil special emphasis on tantric meditation according to the teachings of the founder, and the monastery is surrounded by meditation caves and huts. Until the 19th century Drigung Thil had two faculties, Drubdra Shar ( Tib: sgrub grwa shar ) and Drubdra Nub ( Tib: sgrub grwa nub ). Then, the 34th abbot of the monastery, Kyabje Thibe Lodrö invited (Tibetan: rje skyabs thi - ba'i blo gros ), Nyagtrül Jamyang Rinpoche Wanggyel ( Tib: nyag sprul ' jam dbyangs dbang rgyal rin po che ) a, in the monastery to teach, and a third, theoretically and philosophically oriented faculty - Nyichang Shedra ( Tib: gnyis ' chang bshad grwa ) - was founded.

During the Chinese Cultural Revolution Drigung Thil was destroyed and in the 1980s the monastery was rebuilt. Above the monastery there is a popular place for sky burials. Drigung Thil today again a number of neighboring monasteries, including the nunnery Terdrom Jomo Gönpa ( Tib: gter sgrom jo mo dgon pa / Dezhong nisi德 仲尼 寺), which lies in a valley with thermal springs.

Nearby is also Katshel ( Tib: ska tshal ) is one of the four temples, the King Songtsen Gampo ( Tib: srong btsan sgam po) was built.

An incarnate lama of Drigung Thil, Choesang Lobsang Champa ( Tib: chos bzang blo bzang byams -pa), is now deputy secretary general of the Buddhist Society of Tibet and member of the Political Konsultativkonverenz of Tibet.

The monastery is on the list of monuments of Tibet Autonomous Region.

Ceremonies and festivals
