A driver's license or a driver's license is an official document that brings a presence of a license to drive certain vehicles on public transport ground to express.

In Germany, a license contains information about obtaining a license in Austria to grant a driver's license. In Switzerland, the name of this document is driving license ( colloquially ticket, Billet or Permis ), it displays the drive authorization.

In contrast, the driving license, driving license or driving privilege is an administrative act, that is the official license to drive motor vehicles ( Switzerland: motor vehicles ) on public roads, paths and squares. It is to a certain type of vehicle - the vehicle class - bound: Who has the authorization for a class, has the right to drive a vehicle in this class. It is issued by the competent authority and to the fitness to drive and proof of qualifications in the form of a driving test ( Swiss High German: driving test ) linked, in Germany after road traffic law ( Road Traffic Act ) and the driving license regulations ( FeV ), in Austria after the Motor Vehicles Act ( CFG ) and the driver's license law (FSG ) and in Switzerland after the road Traffic Act (SVG ) and the traffic Licensing Regulation ( VZV).

General, History

The license has a more than 100-year history. The concept of a driving license - as well as driver's license - has been around since 1888 ( Prussia). Occasionally, a certificate issued to the automotive pioneer and steam machine designer Léon Serpollet in July 1888 the permission of the city of Paris is known for driving on the public roads as the first " license " in the world. A regulatory review there was the first time in Vienna in 1901 (see VdTÜV exhibition " licenses in Europe "). In the GDR, the driver's license was temporarily referred to as a driver's license.

The approximately 110 different models of driving licenses within the European Economic Area (EEA) have been replaced since 19 January 2013 under current EU law by the single European driving license in credit card format. Since this date, only that value may be issued at the re-issue. Old driving licenses have transition periods; the Member States of the EEA, however, must ensure that fulfill until January 19, 2033, all issued and outstanding licenses all the requirements of the current European directive on driving licenses.
