Drobeta Turnu Severin

Drobeta Turnu Severin (Hungarian Szörényvár ), short- Turnu Severin ( German " turret Severin ", previously only Severin ), is a city in Romania, located in the district of Mehedinţi. The city received in 1972 the additional name " Drobeta ", to commemorate the existence of the Roman city of Drobeta at this point.

History

First Roman foundation of Drobeta

Its history dates back to the Roman city of Drobeta. From this condition are remnants of the built in the years 102-105 Trajan, probably by the eminent Roman architect Apollodorus of Damascus and the ruins of the associated military camp. The reconstruction of a bridge arch adorns the center of a roundabout.

Emergence of Turnu Seberin

Turnu Severin was created under the jurisdiction of the Archbishopric of Kalocsa Hungarian as a medieval colony. The colony Turnu was under the patronage of Saint Severin of Noricum. In 1246, a bishop Gregorius was mentioned by Severin, who is considered the first of the twelve bishops of the medieval Catholic Diocese Severin. The Romanian historian Nicolae Iorga was dated the foundation of the diocese Severin to 1238. Are preserved to this day the foundations of the medieval Catholic St. Severin Cathedral.

Turnu Severin was the eponymous medieval administrative center of the Hungarian Banat of Severin ( " Oltenia " or " Oltenia " ) before the year 1330 was Walachia ( cf. county Krassó - Szörény ).

Coalescence after the Second World War

In the summer of 1940 negotiations between Hungary and Romania to the border issue in Northern Transylvania were held in place, their failure ended in the Second Vienna Award.
