Province

Drogheda (pronounced [ Droheda ] or locally [ drɔ ː da]; Irish: Droichead Átha, [ drɛçəd ɑ ː ] / [ drɛhəd ɑ ː hə ], " bridge over the ford " ) is a town in the Republic of Ireland with 30,435 inhabitants ( 2011).

Geography

Drogheda is located 45 kilometers north of Dublin in County Louth at the beginning of the mouth of the river Boyne, and a few kilometers from the coast of the Irish Sea.

History

1649 the place was the scene of a bloody massacre of Oliver Cromwell's troops.

Attractions

In the immediate vicinity of Drogheda, especially in the Brú na Bóinne are some of the most important archaeological sites of the pre-Christian era of all Ireland. These include the Hill of Tara and Newgrange. Newgrange is of particular importance and fascination of researchers gained, because each year enlightened on some days around the winter solstice by a small gap just above the entrance a ray of sunshine the entire interior of the tomb mound.
