Droitwich Spa is a town in the English county of Worcestershire. The city is located in the district of Wychavon and counts 22,600 inhabitants ( 2001).

History

Droitwich Spa is located on large rock salt deposits. Even in Roman times, salt was won here and a Roman foundation Salinae is attested here. An importance of the place won by connecting to the rail network of the Great Western Railway in the first half of the 19th century. Until the 1960s, the population was consistently below 10,000 people. Since then, however, it has greatly increased due to the influx from the area around Birmingham.

Attractions

Interesting is built 1919-1921 Church of the Sacred Heart and St Catherine of Alexandria ( Church of the Sacred Heart and of Saint Catherine of Alexandria ), a Catholic church, which is known for its extraordinary rich mosaics. The design of the mosaics went back to Gabriel Pippet (* 1880, † 1962), were executed the mosaics by Maurice Josey and Fred Oates. Pippet was mainly influenced by his stay in Ravenna and Rome. In the near Droitwich Spa is Chateau Impney, a 1873-1875 built by the local salt tycoon John Corbett for his wife Neo-Renaissance castle, which is now used as a hotel. Nationally known the place is also situated near by the same transmitter for long -and medium- wave transmitter Droitwich.
