Dropout (communications)

Drop - outs are volume fluctuations or interruptions of the tone at the tape playback, caused by insufficient pressure of the magnetic tape to the head, errors in the strip material or dirt between the head and tape. For video tapes to drop-outs have a disturbing effect as running across the screen bright dots or dashes. With DV can turn an entire image and HDV can cause dropouts of up to half a second.

In electrical engineering, the dropout voltage is the difference of the minimum input voltage and output voltage of a voltage regulator.
