Dropping point

The dropping point is the temperature at which a material begins to flow under standardized test conditions. In this case, the substance is controlled as long as heated, until it changes from the solid to the liquid aggregate state. During the measurement, the temperature is detected at which the first drop triggers the fabric specimen.

For greases with solid lubricants or Gelverdickern no dropping point can be determined. The drop point is an important indicator of lubricants and greases, but is also determined for other substances such as wax and asphalt. It is controlled in accordance with DIN ISO 2176 (or DIN Ubbelohde 12785 ).

The drop point is not to be confused with the heat resistance.

Apparatus for determining

An apparatus for determining the dropping point is given in the literature.
