Dropropizine (or Dipropizin ) (trade name: Larylin cough Stiller ®) is a drug from the group of antitussives ( cough charming painkillers ). It is used for irritation and spasmodic cough and irritation of the upper respiratory tract. In case of hepatic or renal impairment, severe cardiovascular disorders and children under 12 years of active substance can not be used. For use in pregnancy or lactation has not been established. At high doses it can cause a short-term drop in blood pressure and heart palpitations. Occasionally diarrhea fatigue and light may occur, rarely, allergic reactions.

Dropropizine containing at Propandiolrest a stereogenic center it is used as a racemic mixture [ 1:1 mixture of (R)- enantiomer and the (S ) enantiomer ]. The active ( S)- enantiomer ( eutomer ) is levodropropizine and is also used as a cough suppressant. The launch of levodropropizine in 2000 was attributed to a reduction of side effects at the same dose. To produce a comparable intensity of undesirable central side effects, compared to dropropizine enough about half the dose levodropropizine.

The mechanism of action is not yet fully understood.
