Dropull

Dropull (Albanian indefinite, provides: Drop Ulli; Greek Drópolis Δρόπολις ) is a region in the district of Gjirokastra in southern Albania. It is the broad valley of the Drino extending as level from the Greek border to the north of Gjirokastra. Two communities in southern Dropull - Dropull i Siperm ( Upper Dropull ) and Dropull i Poshtëm ( Lower Dropull ) - are inhabited mainly by members of the Greek minority.

These two communities include the following villages: Derviçan, Glina, Jorgucat, Sofratika, Dhuvjan, Frashtan, Bularat, Bodrishta and Vodhina.

History

In Sofratika witness the ruins of the theater of Hadrianopolis of a major Graeco- Roman city in the middle of the plane, which was named after the Roman emperor Hadrian. During the 6th; century the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I moved the settlement to the present-day village Peshkëp in southeastern Dropull to build on a more suitable site, a fortified city against the invasion of the barbarians. In Byzantine source, this also Ioustinianoupolis is called. Even today, ruins, to see parts of the aqueduct and the remains of churches. In the 11th century the place was called Dryinoupolis. It is believed that this name from the old or the nearby river Drino derived. Since the 5th century, the city was also a bishop's seat.

Due to the bad economic situation in the region, many inhabitants emigrated to the United States of America.
