Dru Drury

Dru Drury ( born February 4, 1725 in Wood Lane, London, † January 15, 1804 in Turnham Green ) was a British entomologist.

Life and work

Dru Drury's father was a silversmith, from the Dru took over the business in 1748. In 1789 he finished his work as a silversmith and devoted his life to entomology. Even before that, Drury was interested in the entomology and was 1780-1782 president of the Society of Entomologists of London. He died in 1804 at the age of almost 79 years and was buried at St. Martin-in -the-Fields.

Between 1770 and 1787 he published the three -volume work Illustrations of Natural History, Wherein are Exhibited upwards of 240 figures of Exotic Insects, which was later revised and re-released under the title Illustrations of Exotic Entomology 1837.

Drury was also an assiduous collector. Its collection includes more than 11,000 species.
