Drum rudiment#Diddle rudiments

The Paradiddle, a drum rudiment, is a particular exercise or stroke technique for percussion instruments ( mostly drums, but also other percussion instruments). It is a combination of single and double strokes. The particular challenge for the drummer is that he can play the single strokes, although normal, while the double strokes are performed with a special double strike movement. The succession of two single strokes and a double beat is onomatopoeic described as "Para - Diddle ".

Made out to have the Paradiddles of 16 basic strokes (basic pattern), which are first practiced individually and later combined in a patchwork method to create such increasingly complex rhythms.

The easiest exercise method is alternating with the right hand ( R) and the left hand ( L) beat. In most cases, the exercises are practiced in groups.

For a group of four beats there are only 16 possibilities. The " Diddles " (double strokes) that arise from it, are blue or green highlighted.

R = right hand L = Left Hand

  • LLLL, RRRR, RLRL, LRLR
  • LRRR, RLRR, RRLR, RRRL
  • RLLL, LRLL, LLRL, LLLR
  • RRLL, LRRL, RLLR, LLRR

By stringing together these patterns and combination of striking techniques can be composed from this simple exercise a large number of new patterns and rhythms.
