Features

Imago

The moths reach a wingspan of 30 to 40 millimeters. You have colored in various shades of brown wings. The front wings have the inner edge of the typical for most dental Spinner species shed tooth. The root field of the forewing is somewhat lightened. A dark brown stain in the form of a triangle in the front wing tip distinguishes the moths from the otherwise similar species Ungefleckter tooth Spinner ( Drymonia Dodonaea ), Dark Gray tooth Spinner ( Drymonia ruficornis ) and Southern Dental Spinner ( Drymonia velitaris ). Occurrence

The species is widespread in Europe, but absent in Scandinavia, the UK and some Mediterranean regions. She lives in different habitats in which their forage plants grow, such as in sparse deciduous mixed forests with undergrowth and in glades with oak and beech bushes.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly mainly in one generation from late May to early July, and on warm places in a second generation in August and September. They fly to the artificial light sources. At rest, they hold the wings roof-like. The caterpillar is found from July to September. It pupates in a loose cocoon on the ground. Hibernation takes place in the pupal stage. The doll is about two times occasionally.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed mainly on the leaves of oak (Quercus ) and beech ( Fagus ). They prefer doing bushes.

Threats and conservation

The species occurs in Germany, depending on the region in a very different number on is not resident as rare, but is not considered in acute danger.
