DTCN F17

Submarines and surface vessels

The dTc n F17 is a French heavy torpedo in the caliber of 55 centimeters.

History

After the Direction Technique des Constructions Navales ( dTc n ) recognized the range problem of dTc n L5, it was decided to construct a new torpedo with at least twice the range. The result was the F17. Unlike its predecessor, it was decided to start this to make wire- guided torpedo. This, however, the gun bust a versatility. Autonomous scans that the L5 was able to execute independently, and then attack a target independently found, were not possible at the beginning. Finally, when the first complaints of the French Navy arrived, we changed the controlling principle. F17P, a variant that was originally intended only for export, received both the Thomson-CSF-aktiv/passiv-Panoramasuchkopf for automatic target detection and engagement, as well as the ability to wire steering system for direct attacks. First customer outside Europe was Saudi Arabia for its frigates Madina class.

Technical Features

The torpedo, which can be used both against surface - like underwater targets, exists in several versions:

  • The F17 Mod 1 is 5.90 meters long and has a range of 20 000 m at 35 knots.
  • The F17 Mod 2 ( entry: 1988) is 5,384 m long and has a range of 20 000 m at an increased speed of 40 knots.
  • The F17P Mod 2 ( entry: 1985) is 5,620 meters long and has a range of 30 000 m at 35 knots.

Experimentally, these torpedoes were fitted with a fiber optic control cable instead of the usual metal cable.
