Dual-homed

For a dual -homed host ( DHH ) is a host that is located in two network environments. This usually means that he has IP addresses of at least two networks.

The DHH is from both networks reach out, but does not establish a direct network connection between the networks and forwards packets from a particular network, destined for the other network, look no further.

The DHH - method has several purposes:

  • Separation between user and network administration or backup power for reasons of safety or performance.
  • A server can be dual -homed configured to answer requests from two different networks out differently can, for example, if requests are to be handled from the local network other than requests from the Internet. This may also happen for other intentions out about performance reasons.
  • To route instead of a firewall that has the purpose only defined packages from one to the other network, the routing can also remain completely disabled. Users on a network that want to send packets to another network, then have to be registered, for example, via Telnet or Secure Shell, on the DHH and the program to get access to the other network, from this computer. start

If the two networks separated by a firewall, it should be noted when configuring the DHH that response packets are sent back on the same network interface on which they were received. This is impossible in the case when a sender with only one IP address needs to address both addresses of DHH, as the return routing is determined by the sender's IP, which is always the same.

The term is not part of an RFC or an Internet standards and is used almost exclusively by experts.
