Duane Sutter

Duane Calvin Sutter ( born March 16, 1960 in Viking, Alberta) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach and currently the Director of Player Development for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League.

Life

Duane Sutter began his career in 1976 and played in his first two years mainly in the Red Deer Rustlers in the subprime Development League Alberta Junior Hockey League, before he finally moved to the Lethbridge Broncos in 1978 after six inserts in the previous seasons in the Western Hockey League. Sutter showed very good performances, scoring 50 goals and 75 assists in 71 games and also had physical toughness, which he presented with 212 penalty minutes the test. Then he was selected by the New York Islanders in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft in 1979 at position 17.

At the beginning of the season 1979/80 he was still playing for the time being at the Broncos in the WHL, but was soon on the NHL squad of Islanders and helped them win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Sutter established himself as a defensive playing striker in the NHL and won the next three seasons, each time the Stanley Cup with the Islanders and played especially during the playoffs of the 1982/83 season an important role, as he scored nine goals in 20 games and twelve more prepared. In 1984, he reached in his fifth season for the fifth time, the Stanley Cup final, but this time the team failed because of the Edmonton Oilers.

Duane Sutter played three more years for the New York Islanders before he was transferred in 1987 to the Chicago Blackhawks. In Chicago, his career was slowly coming to an end and Sutter was able to achieve more than 20 points in any season, so in 1990 he ended his active career.

He was the organization of the Blackhawks as a scout and get watching young players in Western Canada. In 1992 he took over as coach at the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL, where he, but after the end of the WHL season in the spring of 1993 he left future NHL players, like Rob Niedermayer and Mike Rathje supervised back the team and coached the Indianapolis Ice, the former IHL farm team of the Chicago Blackhawks, for the time being for the last 16 season games, but then remained in office until 1995.

In the summer of 1995 he was engaged by the Florida Panthers as assistant coach who could make it to the Stanley Cup Final against the Colorado Avalanche in 1996. Sutter remained on the position until the summer of 1998, when he took over the post as per Scout with the Panthers. End of 2000, Sutter was appointed head coach of the Florida Panthers, but was replaced after lack of success after one year. He then worked half a year as a scout and assistant coach, before he was appointed Director of Player Development for the Panthers in the summer of 2002. In this position, Sutter is for the training of the players responsible especially in the farm team and facing the development of all members of the organization youth players.

Duane Sutter have made it five in the NHL six brothers of those. Darryl Sutter completed 406 games and scored 279 points, is currently general manager of the Calgary Flames and was coach of three NHL teams. The Islanders Duane Sutter played with his younger brother Brent. Together they won the Stanley Cup twice. Duane was 1,111 times in the NHL, scoring 829 points to. Since summer 2007 he has been coach of the New Jersey Devils in the NHL.

Brian Sutter played 779 games with 636 points for the St. Louis Blues, the 11 is not more forgiving player's shirt number in his honor. Nine years he was captain of the team. Ron Sutter was also coached by his brother Darryl and indeed in San Jose for a total of three years. Ron played 1,093 games in the NHL and was able to achieve 533 points. For a year he was captain of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Brent Sutter's son Brandon is next member of the family early in his NHL career after he was selected in 2007 by the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL Entry Draft. Brett Sutter, the son of Darryl Sutter is currently captain of the Red Deer Rebels and was also drafted.
