Duarte Lobo

Duarte Lobo (* 1565, † September 24, 1646 ) was a Portuguese composer of the Renaissance.

In his time he was considered the most famous composer of his country. His work belongs to the so-called " golden age " of Portuguese polyphony.

Date and place are not backed up. It is known that he was a pupil of Manuel Mendes in Évora, where he had probably his first job as Kapellmeister at the city's cathedral. Later Duarte Lobo lived in Lisbon. He signed his works with the Latinized form of his name, Eduardus lupus.

From him six volumes have been preserved with sacred music, including fairs, antiphons, the responses and the motets.

Due to the geographic isolation of Portugal in Europe Lobos music style is rather conservative; his lifetime actually enough into the Baroque era.
