Dubois County, Indiana

Dubois County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Jasper.

Geography

The County is located in southwestern Indiana, is located in the south about 45 miles from Kentucky and has an area of 1127 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Martin County, Orange County, Crawford County, Perry County, Spencer County, Warrick County, Pike County and Daviess County.

History

Dubois County was formed on December 20, 1817 from parts of Pike County. It was named after Toussaint Dubois, a Captain in the War of 1812 and at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Dubois County 39,674 people in 14,813 households and 10,739 families. The population density was 36 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.54 percent White, 0.14 percent African American, 0.10 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.51 percent from other races groups; 0.47 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 14,813 households out of which 37.1 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 61.8 percent were married couples living together, 7.4 percent were single mothers and 27.5 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent of all households and 9.9 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.13.

27.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.9 percent between 18 to 24, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44 years. 22.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 96.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 44,169, and the median income for a family $ 52,342. Males have a median income of $ 32,484, women $ 23,526. The per capita income was $ 20,225. 2.9 percent of families and 5.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
