Duc de Piney

The title Duke of Piney ( Duc de Piney ) was a French noble title. The title holders are often called Duke of Luxembourg ( Duc de Luxembourg ) because the title was awarded to a member of its House of Luxembourg - Ligny. With the same German ducal title the French name has nothing to do.

The title of duke was awarded in September 1576 François de Luxembourg, the third son of Antoine de Luxembourg, Count of Ligny and Brienne. The Duchy was formed here from the dominions Piney, Ramerupt and Montaignon and its dependent territories, all of which were in the counties of Chaumont -en- Bassigny or Troyes. In October 1581 the duchy was elevated to the peerage Piney.

François de Luxembourg, died in 1613 and was succeeded by his son Henri ( 1583-1616 ) inherited. His daughter and heiress was Marguerite Charlotte de Luxembourg ( 1607-1680 ).
