Duchy of Amalfi

The Republic and the Duchy of Amalfi was in the 10th and 11th centuries, a de facto independent state in southern Italy with the city as the center of Amalfi. City and surrounding areas were originally part of the larger Ducatus Neapolitanus which was under a patrician, but could be released from the Byzantine suzerainty. A first Duke was elected in 958. Amalfi was then whose merchants trading in Italy and around the Mediterranean for a century dominated to an economic power before they were overtaken by the competition, for example from the city states of Pisa and Genoa. In 1073 Amalfi lost its independence and fell to the Normans. Robert Guiscard took the title dux Amalfitanorum title. Two rebellions to regaining independence (1096-1101) and (1130-1131) failed. With the sack of the city in 1135 and 1137 by Pisa ended the great era of Amalfi.
