The Entenschnabelkärpfling ( Adrianichthys kruyti ) is an extremely rare or already extinct species from the family of rice fish. It is endemic in the Lake Poso ( Danau Poso ) on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The specific epithet honors the Dutch anthropologist Albertus Christiaan Kruyt (1869-1949)

Description

The Entenschnabelkärpfling reaches a head-body length of 11 centimeters and a maximum length of 16 centimeters. The body is flattened elongated and easily. He has 14 to 16 dorsal rays and 24-25 Analstrahlen. The most characteristic feature of the Entenschnabelkärpflings is its overhanging upper jaw, which has similarities with a duckbill and the nature owes its common name. The large eyes protrude above the head profile when viewed from the sides.

Way of life

Over the life of the Entenschnabelkärpflings little is known. It lives in the deep areas of Poso Lake. From a specimen was reported that it was a hermaphrodite.

Status

The final proof of Entenschnabelkärpflings was in September 1983 when two specimens were collected. A study of fish catches in Lake Poso in 1986 could not confirm a continued existence of the species. Some local fishermen established a link between the disappearance of the Entschnabelkärpflings and the outbreak of Colo volcano on the island of Una Una in the tomini Bay in 1983 ago. However, this is considered to be baseless allegation because the ash, which can be seen on the satellite photos of the volcanic eruption, was blown to the west, rather than south, where the Lake Poso is located. More likely is that imported fish species such as the Striated Snakehead ( Channa striata ) and the Mozambique tilapia ( Oreochromis mossambicus ) and their parasites to Entenschnabelkärpfling and two more endemic in the Lake Poso species of fish - Adrianichthys poptae and Weberogobius amadi - on the brink of extinction have pushed or already extinct. Until the red list of 1994 Entenschnabelkärpfling by IUCN was " severely compromised " classified as. After the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat 1996 wrote in a study that the type was probably extinct, the Entenschnabelkärpfling in the same year was " threatened with extinction " promoted to the category.
