Duckeella

Duckeella is a genus of the orchid family ( Orchidaceae). It contains only three species of herbaceous plants that are native to the north of South America.

Description

The species of the genus are terrestrial Duckeella growing plants. The roots are slender, fibrous and hairy. The stalk is, in contrast to related genera, not hollow. Several leaves are at the base of the shoot, they are linear with parallel leaf veins arranged.

The sides of the leaves springing inflorescence is a wenigblütige grape with four to twelve, sometimes just a flower. The flowers are 'upside down relatively large, fragrant, the color is yellow. The petals are not fused together, they are all similarly shaped. The inner petals end in comparison to the outer acute, the lip is open at the base and slightly three-lobed with some longitudinal keels. The column is long and slender, the stamen at its end is bent down by more than 90 ° to the column axis. On both sides of the dust sheet, the column has a short Staminodium. The pollen is not glued to pollinia. The seeds are spindle-shaped, with characteristic gaps between the individual cells of the seed coat ( testa).

Occurrence

Duckeella is widespread in tropical America and settled there a small area in Venezuela and neighboring Colombia and Brazil. Two types Duckeella adolphii and Duckeella pauciflora grow in savannas at altitudes between 100 and 200 meters. Duckeella alticola occurs at much higher locations 1300-2000 meters.

Systematics and botanical history

Duckeella is classified within the subfamily Vanilloideae in the tribe Pogonieae. It is the sister group to the remaining genera of Pogonieae (except the uncertain genus placed Pogoniopsis ).

Duckeella was first described in 1940. Type species is Duckeella adolphii. The name honors the Brazilian botanist Walter Adolpho Ducke ( 1876-1959 ).

  • Duckeella alticola C.Schweinf.
  • Duckeella pauciflora Garay
