Dudley Pope

Dudley Bernard Egerton Pope ( born December 29, 1925 in Ashford, Kent, England; † April 25, 1997 in Marigot ( Saint- Martin) ) was a British writer of both maritime novels and historical reference books. The most famous is his series of novels about Lord Ramage be.

Life

Pope was born in England Ashford and joined at the age of 16 years in the merchant navy with the rank of ensign. A year later ( 1942) was the ship on which he was serving torpedoed, and because of his injury suffered while he had to leave the service.

Pope was soon working for a small newspaper in Kent, before he began in 1944 to work for the London newspaper The Evening News as rapporteur on the developments of the Navy.

His first book he published in 1954 and Flag 4 is followed many other representations of historical events. Cecil Scott Forester, the author of the famous novel series about Horatio Hornblower, encouraged Pope to make his literary works of fiction. 1965 then appeared Ramage, the first part of the end -piece 18 marine historical novel series.

His books have been often criticized, because in them he describes Spanish sailors often as incompetent and stupid, but this is a prejudice, because the Spanish Navy at that time was one of the most successful worldwide.

Since 1953 he lived with his wife, Kay - they married in 1954 - on sailboats, first on the 8 -meter William Fife, which he called Concerto. In 1959 the couple lived in Porto Santo Stefano (Italy ) on an approximately 12 -meter ketch called Tokay. 1963 they moved to a cutter called Golden Dragon, on which they sailed to Barbados. In 1968 they moved to a 18-meter yacht, which was given the name Ramage and all the stories and wrote works on the Pope until 1985. His travels and the impressions gained influenced his books in very strong manner.
