Duke Energy is an energy provider in the United States with headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company is listed on the stock index S & P 500 and the Dow Jones Utility Average.

Duke Energy operates in the United States, Canada and Latin America. The company was formed in 1900 under the company name of the Catawba Power Company when Dr. Walker Gill Wylie and his brother a power plant in India Hook Shoals built on the Catawba River.

In 1995 the company won the Edison Award for the best energy supply in the United States. Duke Energy invests in efficient power plants, renewable energy and innovative energy efficiency programs and services and sets its focus on environmental and economic sustainability.

2005 Duke Energy acquired the US-based energy company Cinergy.

10 January 2011 it was announced that Duke Energy will take over its competitors Progress Energy. The purchase price received the Progress shareholders Duke shares worth $ 13.7 billion, as Duke takes over a debt of $ 12.2 billion.
