Duke of Bedford

Duke of Bedford ( named after the place in Bedfordshire England ) is a British hereditary title of nobility, which was awarded several times in the Peerage of England. The title is managed by the Russell family.

The family seat is at Woburn Abbey Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

Ceremonies

The first award of the Dukedom was in the 14th century to John of Lancaster, the third son of Henry IV and later regent of France. Further commitments were provided in 1470 to George Neville, the nephew of Richard Neville ( called Warwick the Kingmaker ), and 1485 to Jasper Tudor, uncle of Henry VII.

Today the Russell family holds the title of Earl and Duke of Bedford. John Russell, a close advisor of Henry VIII and Edward VI. was appointed in 1551 to the Earl of Bedford, his descendant William Russell, 5th Earl of Bedford, after the Glorious Revolution to the Duke.

Subordinate title

The subsidiary title of the Duke of Bedford are: Marquess of Tavistock ( 1694 ), Earl of Bedford ( 1550), Baron Russell ( 1539), Baron Russell ( 1603) and Baron Howland ( 1695). They all belong to the peerage of England.

The courtesy title of the eldest son of the Marquess of Tavistock Dukes is.
