Duke of Exeter

The title Duke of Exeter has been awarded several times in England in the late Middle Ages, when Exeter was the capital of Devon. The first title winner was from 1397, John Holland, the half-brother of King Richard II. , The title was declared at the accession of Henry IV two years later invalidated. Later, the title of Thomas Beaufort, 1st Earl of Dorset, an uncle of Henry V was given. After the death of the heritage loose Dukes (1426 ) the family Holland received the title back; with the indictment of the 3rd Duke of belonging to the House of Lancaster, it was forfeit. The 3rd Duke died in 1475 without heirs. Since then, the title was not awarded again. The title Marquess of Exeter and Earl of Exeter, however, were in use.
