Duke of Grafton

Duke of Grafton is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of England, which is run by the family FitzRoy.

The family seat is Euston Hall in Suffolk.

Award

The title was created in 1675 by King Charles II for his illegitimate son, Henry FitzRoy, whom he had with his mistress Barbara Villiers, 1st Duchess of Cleveland. This came at the siege and conquest of the Irish city of Cork on October 9, 1690 lost their lives.

The most famous bearer of the title Augustus Henry FitzRoy, 3rd Duke of Grafton, 1767-1770 Prime Minister, but many Dukes and other members of this family -operated in various political offices, while others served in the military ranks.

Subordinate title

The Duke of Grafton leads three in 1672 also in the Peerage of England granted subsidiary title: Earl of Euston, Viscount Ipswich and Baron Sudbury. The eldest son of the Duke leads the courtesy title Earl of Euston, whose eldest son to those of a Viscount Ipswich.

More titles

The second Duke inherited from his mother the title Earl of Arlington, Viscount Thetford, and Baron Arlington. These are also included in the Peerage of England and are all inherited in the female line. As the ninth Duke died, they therefore did not go through to the tenth winner of the title, but rested since the ninth Duke had two daughters ( fell into abeyance ). The suspension of the barony has since been canceled in favor of a granddaughter, while still rest the other two titles.

Grafton

Most of the English dukedoms are associated with known landscapes or cities. Most Britons, however, would have difficulty in making Grafton locate on a map. The title is part of the Honour of Grafton in the south east of Northamptonshire, the capital is now called Grafton Regis.
