Duke of Sutherland

Duke of Sutherland is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is run by the family Leveson - Gower. It derives from the County Sutherland, Scotland.

The family seat was originally Lilleshall Hall in Shropshire, England. Among the later larger family seats include Trentham Hall, Dunrobin Castle and Cliveden. In the 19th and early 20th centuries Stafford House was the London townhouse of the family.

Award

The title was awarded to George Granville Leveson - Gower, 2nd Marquess of Stafford in 1833. This was for 20 years been a deputy in the House of Commons before he inherited the title and estates of his father. He is considered the richest Briton of the 19th century.

Subordinate title

The great-grandfather of the first Dukes in 1703 in the County of York, raised to Baron Gower, of Sittenham. He was also a member of Parliament and also also Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. This title belongs to the Peerage of England.

1746 was the grandfather of the first Dukes, who held the office of Lord Privy Seal for many years, Earl Gower with the subordinate title Viscount Trentham, of Trentham appointed in the County of Stafford. Would Both belong to the Peerage of Great Britain.

More titles

Already in 1620 was an ancestor of the first Dukes to Baronet, of Sittenham, were collected. This dignity belongs to the Baronetage of England and is still led by the respective Duke.

The second Duke inherited from his mother in 1839 whose title Earl of Sutherland ( created in 1230 ) and the simultaneously created subsidiary title of Lord Strathnaver, both of which belong to the peerage of Scotland. Since both tracks can also be inherited through the female line, if a title holder has no sons, they fell at the death of the fifth Duke in 1963 to his niece.
