Dulcian

The dulcian, also Dulcian or Dolcian ( from Latin dulcis "sweet" ) is a woodwind instrument with direct angeblasenem double reed and conical bore.

The dulcian was developed in the first half of the 16th century. He has in common with the shawm and the conical bore with Sordunen and Korth Olten bent, parallel bore. As the dulcian many other instruments of the Renaissance was built in families from soprano to bass. The smaller instruments the family to the bass were doing usually made of one piece of wood, more then two or three parts. For all dulcians the reed attached to an S- slide made of brass.

In the 17th century, without losing the small Dulzianformen important. During the baroque bassoon was developed from the dulcian, besides remained for a time also the Bassdulzian in use. As a special case were in Spain until the 19th century, various sizes of Dulzians in use.

Composers from earlier solo works are, inter alia, Bartolomeo de Selma y Salaverde, Philipp Friedrich Böddecker, Giulio Mussi.
