Dumitrița

Dumitrita ( German Walter village, Hungarian Kisdemeter ) is a municipality in the so-called Nösnerland in northern Transylvania in the district Bistrita-Nasaud in Romania. It lies about 14 km southeast of the county seat, Bistrita ( Bistrita ).

History

About the founding of Walter village there are no written sources. You probably took place 1150-1190. For the first time Walter village was mentioned by the name of the parish priest in a tax list in 1335, which is preserved in the papal archives. The settlement was made on the initiative of the Hungarian King Géza II, the German colonists ( Transylvanian Saxons ) to deforestation and Urbachmachung the lands called to Transylvania.

Even in the mid -19th century, about 70 % of the population known as German native speakers. By 1930, this proportion was reduced to about 51% at 783 residents. Furthermore, the population was 1930 about 27 % of persons with Romanian and about 19% with the Yiddish language. The absolute number of the Transylvanian Saxons took during this period from (1850: 505, 1930: 389), that of the other nationalities ( from 151 to 394).

A similar trend can be seen when looking at the religious affiliation. In 1850, approximately 87% were members of the Lutheran Church ( 561 of 656 ). In 1939 their share was about 65 % (504 of 783 people ), the members of the Greek Catholic Church accounted for approximately 30% (232 ) and members of the Jewish community under 3 % ( 19).

In September 1944, the German inhabitants fled nearly complete before the approaching front and it had only a single old and infirm back.
