Dun Carloway

Dun Carloway ( Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Chàrlabhaigh ) is a Broch in the district of Carloway, on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis in Scotland.

It is a remarkably well preserved broch - on the east side reach parts of the wall still has a height of nine meters. In some places there are also more modern repairs to the east wall. Dun Carloway was probably built in the 1st century BC; radiocarbon dating of preserved Broch proved that it was occupied around 1300 AD. The base of the Broch measures 14 to 15 feet in diameter and the walls are three feet thick. It has a circular plan and hollow walls and was built without mortar. The Broch probably has wooden floors, interior walls and a thatched roof, necessary to make it habitable, but the only remaining evidence of this are holes. Together with the roof, the narrow passageway was probably secured by a wooden door, they were the most vulnerable parts of the building, particularly from fire.
