Dunaszentmiklós
Dunaszentmiklós ( German: Niklo ) is a municipality in Komárom- Esztergom in Hungary. It has about 450 inhabitants.
Settlement name
Dunaszentmiklós means literally translated Sankt Nikolaus an der Donau. In the Middle Ages there was a church dedicated to the honor of St. Nicholas.
History
First mention of the city was in 1382 as " Zenth Myklos ". During a Turkish campaign, the village was destroyed in 1529 and it remained uninhabited until the 18th century. Count József Esterházy moved Catholic Germans from Westphalia in the 1730s, which have a built in Hungary German characteristic street village, traces of which can also be seen nowadays. The community has its own self-government since 1990 and since 1994, the German minority administration operates in Dunaszentmiklós. 2003, a holiday village was built within the settlement of Dutch tourists. In support of tourism a private Swingolfplatz is operated.
